Guidelines for writing in a four-part SATB texture are helpful to quickly move from one chord to the next. If done correctly, a guideline will make it easier for the musicians and the music will sound better. Parallel fifths and octaves will be avoided, keeping the independence of the four voices and the integrity of the four-part texture.
The methods for moving each voice are based on the movement of the bass. In this tutorial, the bass stays the same, but some or all of the upper voices move. Each upper voice (SAT) may either stay the same or leap to another part of the chord.
When the voices move, they must NOT 1) leap over an adjacent voice, (2) end with voice crossing, (3) end with more than an octave between soprano and alto, or alto and tenor, (4) move out of the range of the voice, (5) or create a new chord in which the root is not doubled.
