INTACH Conservation Institute Lecture Series 'Conservation Insights 2020’ was delivered on 31st July at 17.00 IST via Zoom
Speaker: Kaitlyn Munro (Textile conservator, Caring for Textiles, Washington, DC, USA)
The title of the talk: Burn Out: Case Studies in Conserving Printed Textiles
The chemistry of 18th and 19th century printed textiles, a tour de force of chemical engineering, combined natural dyes with strong mordants, and made for splendid textiles, and two hundred years later, a predictable pattern of damage. Referred to in conservation as the problem of ‘inherent vice’, often the mordants used to secure and brighten the red, brown, black and blue dyes, have metallic ores that have oxidized and corroded the fibres over time; resulting in a very specific burn out pattern. The common problems and solutions of analysing and conserving eighteenth and nineteenth century printed textiles will be reviewed and critiqued.
