Before removing the doors for painting and new hardware, I decided to install deadbolt locks first to add extra security — and to avoid damaging freshly painted doors later on.

In this video, I walk through drilling and fitting new heavy-duty deadbolt locks into solid wood doors, dealing with mismatched drill bit sizes, hard wood that cuts slower than expected, and the importance of taking your time when accuracy really matters. From lining everything up with the paper template to carving out clean insets for the lock hardware, this was one of those jobs where there’s no room for rushing.

I also share a simple trick for marking the exact spot where the deadbolt hits the door frame, hollowing out the jamb so everything sits flush, and safely removing doors and hardware before painting. Once the locks were fitted, the doors were removed, sanded, scraped, and marked to make sure each one goes back to the right opening after painting.
