Door Frame Eaten by Termites - Here's What I Did | TIKTOK Apartments

While installing new door locks, I uncovered a much bigger problem than expected — a door frame that had been rotted and likely eaten away by termites. What started as a simple repair with glue and wood filler quickly turned into a full-on investigation once I realized how bad the damage really was.

In this video, I walk through how I removed one side of the damaged door frame, assessed the remaining structure, and figured out a way to make it work without tearing everything out. The original frame appeared to be preassembled, which made reinstalling a replacement piece tricky — especially with nails, tabs, and tight angles working against me.

I show how I modified the replacement piece, trimmed the locking tab, shimmed the frame, and carefully worked it back into position using basic tools. There was plenty of uncertainty (and sweat), but in the end the door closed properly on the first try — a huge relief.

Later, I also explain why I decided to replace the old wooden door with a PVC door, after discovering severe rot at the bottom caused by exposure to the elements. You’ll see how I measured, matched hinge locations, and ran into yet another surprise when the new door turned out to be slightly larger than expected.

This wasn’t planned, it wasn’t perfect — but it worked.
