Women's Sporting Fashions: A visit to the Figge Museum (19th and 20th century history, fashion)

The word "museum" comes from an Ancient Greek word meaning "a temple to the Muses." Museums provide inspiration to all of us. In this video author Sarah A. Chrisman shares a recent visit to the exhibit, "Sporting Fashion: Outdoor Girls 1800 to 1960", currently at the Figge Museum in Davenport, Iowa, and on loan from FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising). Showcasing fashions fro the full 19th-century and the first half of the 20th-century, this display had some particularly fine examples of women's sports clothing through the years. Garments on display at the museum included cycling outfits from the 19th-century, a 19th-century roller blading outfit, a mountaineering dress from the 1890's, a hunting dress from the 1840's, a fur-lined ice skating outfit from the 1810's, a croquet dress, 19th-century swimwear, 19th-century archery gear, tennis outfits, Victorian fencing outfits for women, a gardening dress from the 1830's, equestrian dresses, rain gear, a summer corset with sleeve supports, a traveling dress from the 1870's, a cricket dress, picnicking outfits, a Redfern promenading ensemble for Royal Ascot, a chatelaine belt with fans, women's golfing clothes from the 1890's, a winter walking outfit with feathered cape from the 1820's, a toboganing dress, yachting outfits, and more.
