1940 Harley Davidson WL 45ci
The 45ci 750cc Harley Davidson WL had the longest running production of any Harley model until the Sportster took over the title some years ago. The tried and true flathead engine sports a "whopping" 25hp @ 4500 rpm and a top cruising speed of approximately 65 mph. Built to last, Harley used these motors for the war effort as well as for utilitarian use for police and meter maid service in the big cities. The W 45ci motor was also used for competition for many years under the WR badge and was quite successful against the Indian and Excelsiors of the day. Later on, when the British invasion hit after WWII, the WRs were still very competitive all the way up to 1952 when the factory retired the WR and started racing the KR's in Class C racing. The street version was also quite popular as they were much more nimble and not as large or heavy as their 74ci big brothers. This very nice example was refurbished a number of years ago and was a treasured possession of a local So. Cal. enthusiast that owned and rode it for many years. Unfortunately, time takes it's toll on we humans, and the previous owner/caretaker, after 90+years, rode off into the sunset and had to leave the WL behind. This old girl was built for the road and is ready to accompany her next lucky caretaker on many new adventures. There is no past history available on this bike, but, after an inspection and test ride, I can point out that a minimal number of aftermarket parts were obviously used in the rebuild of the bike which include the speedometer, front fender headlight and a number of small sundries. The motor and three speed gear box work quite well and there were no issues with the running gear detected. The motorcycle is titled as a 1940 under a California blue tag with a clear California title. The lower case halves have matching numbers indicating that they are 1945 issue. The motor is stamped as a 1940 WLA and this was obviously done some years later. This very nice motorcycle would be a truly fun rider and is priced very reasonably in comparison to other Harley and Indian motorcycles of this vintage.
