As I’ve been able to get the cards I needed for Pokémon TCG Live’s Ascended Heroes set, TCG Pocket has not been quite so kind (though that’s to be expected as a gacha game; TCG Live is not, so it can be super generous) with Fantastical Parade. The two sets came out within 24 hours, and both feature Kalos region characters and Pokémon.
Well, a few packs in, I got my first Pokémon ex, which is Mega Mawile ex, continuing the Mega Evolutions era. So I tasked myself with what to do with it. Noticing it has an attack similar to Miltank’s where it begins with low damage but builds up as it stays in the Active Spot, I figured I could assemble a deck where Mega Mawile ex cannot be moved out of the Active Spot by any of my opponent because it is the only Pokémon in the deck:
POKÉMON (1)
1x Mega Mawile ex (Fantastical Parade)
TRAINERS (19)
2x Adaman
1x Copycat
1x Cyrus
1x Giovanni
2x Lucky Ice Pop
2x Metal Core Barrier
2x Pokémon Center Lady
2x Professor’s Research
1x Red
2x Sabrina
2x Starting Plains
1x Steel Apron
Everything here is to support Mega Mawile ex, to keep it from getting knocked out as Heat-Up Crunch steadily increases in damage. Lucky Ice Pop, Pokémon Center Lady, Metal Core Barrier, Steel Apron (after the Metal Core Barriers have been used), Adaman, and Starting Plains contribute to that. Some will heal (Lucky Ice Pop being a better Potion, Pokémon Center Lady), some reduce damage (Metal Core Barrier, Steel Apron, Adaman), and Starting Plains increases the damage needed to knock out Mega Mawile ex.
There is no upper limit to how much damage Heat-Up Crunch can do, and so it is necessary to have Mega Mawile ex last as many turns as possible, especially since, without Trainer-based Energy acceleration like Crispin or Waitress, you must pass at least one turn before you can start doing so. Sabrina, Cyrus, Red, and Giovanni are to score some points, and Professor’s Research and Copycat are to help you get to those cards faster.
After that, it’s very simple to play: just do whatever you can to minimize the chances of Mega Mawile ex getting knocked out by keeping its HP as high as possible. The highest damage I could come up with to mitigate damage is 70 though, but it does mean this can work well against low-damage decks (or Mega Kangaskhan ex if you happen to have both Metal Core Barrier and Adaman around).
The downsides are that this deck is guided by the whims of chance, both for yourself and for your opponent (because it can be overwhelmed if the damage from the opponent gets too high or if they set up so enough before Heat-Up Crunch can do much damage), and that you effectively lose a turn if you go first. Hence, it was unfortunate for me that I had to go first in this match, but it was unfortunate for my opponent that they needed to buy time via Indeedee ex sitting in their Active Spot, allowing Heat-Ho Crunch to reach very high levels of damage, eventually within one-hit knockout range of Indeedee ex.
