This is the MSR performance of The Highlanders (4 Scots) Pipes & Drums in Lurgan at the UK championships.
The tunes played are:
March: The Taking of Beaumont Hamel - John MacLellan, Dunoon
Strathspey: Arniston Castle - Traditional
Reel: The Brown Haired Maid - Traditional
The march is named after the capture of Beaumont Hamel, Northern France during the Battle of the Somme in WW1 by the 51st Highland Division. This reputed division is also remembered by its namesake as a popular 4/4 march within the piping repertoire.
The strathspey is of traditional origin and it is assumed by the writer to be linked to Arniston House near Edinburgh.
The reel has traditional roots. Sources point towards this as being a P/M Donald MacLeod creation, arrived at by transposition of the reel "Ca' The Ewes" up a key.
The Highlanders (4 Scots) Pipes & Drums are an active military unit, made up of serving soldiers within the battalion. This section of the Royal Regiment of Scotland (RRS) is the product of the amalgamation of the Queen's Own Highlanders (QOH) and the Gordon Highlanders in 1994, forming 1st Battalion The Highlanders, which further amalgamated with the other battalions in 2006 to form the RRS as it is known today.
It is interesting to note that among the current playing members in this band is Lance-Corporal Norman Gillies, the father of which - P/M Alasdair Gillies - was the serving senior Pipe Major during the relinquishing of command of the QOH during the initial amalgamation conducted at Craigellachie Bridge on 27th November 1995.
Also of interest is the current leadership of the band - P/M Peter Grant and D/M Rhuaridh Grant - the first brother leader partnership in the history of the regiment.
