Imagine driving the lap of your life and still knowing you cannot start in the top 5.
That’s exactly the situation Valtteri Bottas finds himself in as he returns to Formula 1 with Cadillac F1 Team for the opening race of the 2026 season.
The story goes back to the final race of 2024, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Bottas was involved in a collision with Kevin Magnussen’s Haas, and the race director handed him a five-place grid penalty for the next race.
Here’s where it gets weird.
Bottas didn’t have a contract for the 2025 season, so he didn’t race at all. After 2024, new FIA regulations stated that penalties on a driver’s licence are only valid for 12 months. After that, they expire.
But Bottas’ penalty doesn’t.
Why? Because it was issued under the old FIA rules, and the new regulations don’t apply retroactively. So even after sitting out an entire season, he still has to serve that penalty in 2026.
Formula 1 isn’t just fast on track. It’s ruthless in the rulebook.
Do you think Cadillac will be competitive with the top constructors this year?
