A potential mass prison break involving nearly 6,000 hardened ISIS detainees in northern Syria was narrowly prevented, according to a senior U.S. intelligence official. As instability and fighting intensified, U.S. officials feared the collapse of Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces guarding the prisons could instantly reconstitute ISIS. A multi-agency operation involving ODNI, CENTCOM, the State Department and Iraqi authorities led to a rapid airlift transferring the detainees into Iraqi custody within weeks. FBI teams are now biometrically identifying prisoners for prosecution. However, families in camps like al-Hol were not included, raising fresh concerns about radicalization and long-term regional security risks.
