Daniel Lipshutz Forrest is a PhD student in the Resources, Environment and Sustainability program at @ubcscience . His research explores how urbanization affects biodiversity and its benefits to people. His early PhD research will explore how the urban bird community might be changed by accessible food waste and bird feeding. He and colleagues hypothesize that Vancouver's crow population is so large because of abundant, accessible food waste, and that many songbirds, like robins, are unable to thrive because these crows eat their eggs and young.
Later, he will explore the social and political processes that have led to the inequitable distribution of garbage, and how this goes on to affect bird diversity and people's experiences in the city. He hopes this research will help inform urban planning for sustainability and social and environmental justice.
Daniel is a #UBCPSI Public Scholar Initiative recipient, a Vanier Scholar, and is the recipient of a 2023 Killam Doctoral Prize. For more information on his research, visit his profile: https://www.grad.ubc.ca/campus-commun...
