About 40 volunteers came together on October 25 to #GreenMyCity at the West Lions Park Gleaning Food Forest in London, Ontario’s Kensington Village. The goal of the day was to boost the productivity of the food forest by removing weeds, restoring pathways, and improving organization for future harvests, ensuring that fresh produce can reach local community members who need it most.
The food forest features a diverse range of fruiting plants, including pears, apples, medlars, pawpaws, chestnuts, hazelnuts, persimmons, currants, raspberries, blackberries, elderberries, and Saskatoon serviceberries.
The community planting day quickly became a lively social event. Volunteers made new friends while learning about edible gardening, local wildlife, and preparing gardens for winter. Together, they created fresh pathways through the garden by smothering crabgrass with cardboard and covering it with soil and mulch. As some worked on the pathways, others planted new trees and shrubs or pressed locally donated apples into cider. The morning wrapped up with a well-earned pizza party.
