The Nihahi Ridge South hike in Kananaskis Country is a popular and challenging trail, especially during the summer months. The trail offers a mix of terrain, including gravel paths, forested sections, alpine meadows, and rocky scree. The final stretch to the south summit involves some scrambling, but the panoramic views from the top make it worthwhile. Canadian Rockies Hike.
June 21/2022 Summer Hike and Scramble
Today we are back in the Little Elbow Provincial Recreation Area, and we will be hiking and scrambling up the Nihahi Ridge South trail. This trail is 12.7 kilometers out and back, with an elevation gain of 817 meters.
For the first part of the trail overlooks the Little Elbow River. Then it basically becomes a road walk for the first 2.2k to the trailhead. I scootered this part. Now you will work you way up the trail in the trees, with a gradual elevation. At 3.5k the trail opens up into a meadow area, and you start to get some views. Here you can clearly see your objective ahead of you. The trail heads back into the trees and gets a little bit steeper. At 4.1k you will reach a rocky outcrop and get some great views of the valley below you. As you hike up a rocky ridge the trail opens up and you start to get views of the mountains on your left. At 5.1k you will have reached the saddle. Up to this point it has just been a hike, if you continue on be prepared to start and scramble. Now the trail gets really steep, and rocky. At about 5.4k the trail levels out for a bit. At 5.6k you will start to climb again. The views start to open up to your right, and you can see Calgary from here. At 5.9k you will have reached the first major scrambling section. This is a great spot to take a break with some awesome views. Now you will continue a steep ascent up rocky terrain. The trail levels out one again and soon you will see the top of the ridge, your destination. Now you have to scramble you way up to the ridge. Just below the ridge you will reach a new vertical section that you have to climb. There are two routes that you can climb here. The one on the right is marked with yellow paint, this is the one I went up, but from what I have heard the one on the left is a little bit easier. At 6.3k I found a nice spot on the top of the ridge to have my lunch. I didn’t quite make it to the true summit as the wind was gusting and rain clouds were moving in. The 360 views at the top were amazing. I started the downclimb of the cliff section face forward but quickly had to change to climb down facing the cliff. This was the sketchiest part of the whole hike. Just before I reached the second scrambling section it started to rain. I scrambled down the second section face forward on my bum, and it was fairly easy. Once I got down this section I was treated to a beautiful double rainbow. As I worked my way back to the saddle there were a few very steep sections to go down. From the saddle the hike down was a walk in the park. I scootered the road back to my vehicle.
If you want to hike up to this ridge, be prepared to scramble a couple very steep sections. Up to the saddle it is a hike. Another great outing.
