Merthyr Tydfil town centre neighbourhood policing officers have disrupted a significant cannabis operation.
The operation came as a result of intelligence gathered by the neighbourhood policing team (NPT). Suspicious activity had been reported around the former Taffy’s bar on Bethesda Street in Merthyr.
Officers, alongside specialist resources, conducted a search on the building in November 2025. In the bar officers found several large rooms which were converted into a cannabis cultivation. Over 1,500 plants were found across the whole of the venue.
During the search two men were located upstairs amongst the grow of cannabis and they had tried to run up a ladder into the attic area.
Guri Bajrami, 29 from no fixed abode and Kledi Hysa, 31 from no fixed abode both pleaded guilty to production of cannabis when they appeared before
Merthyr Tydfil Crown court on December 16.
Today (February 6) they were both sentenced to one year and six months in prison.
Sergeant Carla Morris-Griffiths said “This scale of criminality could have had a significant impact on the local community and often exploits young or vulnerable people to take the risk, while others receive the benefits.
This outcome was the result of some great partnership working between the Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), intelligence from the local community, and support from local authority partners.”
