Discover Passau’s hidden gem – Ilzstadt, where medieval history meets lush Bavarian nature. 🌿
Highlight: Don’t miss the Trifftsperre at 09:20 – a hidden 5 km drive from Hals with breathtaking river loops and overwhelming nature. Only visible if you follow this video!
The heart of Ilzstadt is Hals, a medieval settlement founded in 1280 at today’s Burgruine Hals, situated at the narrowest point of the Halser Ilzschleifen. It once served as the seat of the Lords of Hals and was later the starting point of the Goldener Steig—a historic trade route that now unfolds as a scenic trail through the Bavarian Forest into the Czech Republic.
The River Ilz forms a spectacular loop here. In 1827, the Trifttsperre—a 130-meter tunnel—was dug to divert water to the shallow side of the loop, allowing timber rafts to pass through safely. Only in modern times did it become a convenient shortcut for hikers (and perhaps a little gift for today’s lazy visitors 😉).
High above the forest lies Burg Reschenstein, now mostly hidden by trees and easy to overlook.
Join me on a walk through Ilzstadt—no drone today, but plenty of walking footage and photos—to experience a magical mix of history, hiking, and river-side beauty in Passau’s most enchanting corner.
