During mid to late 2022, CSX 4419, a rare YN2 painted GP40-2, had found its way to several CSX lines in the state of Indiana. For a long period of time, it spent a month or two working the local to and from Mitchell, IN on the CSX Indiana Subdivision, passing several 1920s era CPL signals. While I had the opportunity to go down there on a few occasions, I decided to wait and see if it would make its way a bit closer to home. At the end of August and into early September, it finally found its way to Garrett, and began working the 376/77 jobs east and west of there. I made a few attempts at trying to see this unit, however my first few attempts were foiled by either the engine not being used that day, or the power being spun on the wye and not knowing until the last second.
Finally, on September 6th, I got word that the engine was solo on that day's L376 to and from Defiance, OH. While the Garrett Subdivision at the time was definitely not as eye-catching as the Indiana Subdivision, there are still some unique spots to shoot trains along it. So, with that in mind, I eyed the shot at CR 81 on the IN/OH state line just a few miles west of Hicksville, OH. This is a very unique spot on the Garrett Sub, as Track 1 is elevated and passes over the road on an overpass, where Track 2 crosses the road at grade, thanks to grade differences in both the railroad and the road. I ended up waiting a while before any trains showed up, and even managed to catch a M367 before it, but eventually I did finally get to see the CSX 4419 in person just like everyone else. Note how the engine is notched way up battling the grade with its long train!
Part of me wishes I would have gone to the Indiana Sub when everyone else had, as all the signals that it would have passed have since been replaced by vaders. On top of that, CSX 4419, as of late 2025, has now been repainted into YN3c. Just another reminder on why you shoot what you can, when you can. You never know when it will all be gone.
Enjoy!
