For roughly a year between the summer's of 2023 and 2024, the NS pool based out of Muncie had gotten a hold of several SD40-2s to run locals instead of the normal, mundane 6 axle GEs that had been ruling the Muncie pool for nearly 5 years at this point. Every opportunity I had to catch one of these SD40-2s in the lead of the L69, I took advantage of. One late August day, I was let out of work early and was pleasantly surprised to find L69 working the Wabash Central yard in town with NS 3389, an ex-Conrail SD40-2 still equipped with its original RS3L, and NS 7026, the sole SD60E (and sole widecab engine in Muncie at the time). I would watch the train switch for about 20 minutes before shooting it a final time departing Bluffton. Engineer Chad Thornburg quilled the horn nicely at the few crossings I shot at, and I could tell that he enjoyed his ride!
Unfortunately, GE widecabs are back and have been ruling the Muncie pool once again since about Fall of 2025. It was a short-lived but enjoyable time period seeing the local with SD40s, and hopefully it will happen again soon. Be on the lookout for more videos with SD40-2 action on L69 and L99 in the near future.
