In grain production, spring planted maize crop contributes more than autumn crop in Punjab. Insects are one of the most important bottlenecks in spring maize production. More than a dozon insects like Shoot fly (Etherigona soccata) , army worm (Mythimna separate), several species of aphid, mites, Top borer (Chilo partelus) and Fall army worm (Spodoptera frugiperda) are associated with spring maize. Three insects viz. Shoot fly, Top borer and Fall army worm are of major concern.
As regards shoot fly (Etherigona soccata), it may impart severe hindrance within the 1st month of sowing. In this video, we have advised seed treatment either with Hombre Excel- Bayer (imidacloprid+tebuconazol) @ 10 ml or Cruiser-Syngenta (Thiamethoxom) @ 10 ml per kg of seed prior to planting to escape shoot fly attack for a period of initial one month or so.
