It may be tradition dependent & some traditions may have ancestral pacts and deals in place with local spirits that dictate how these things should be working between practitioners and their spirits. My approach here specifically applies to an average modern practitioner, especially those who identify as animists & who do care about cultivating right relations with local spirits and the land.
