So. Before anything else, small essay time. It's heavy, but read on, it's important.

As I'm featuring one of its songs, it feels necessary to me to mention at large how much Hazbin Hotel S2 handles its plot around extermination really, really badly. No fiction in 2025 can feature such a theme without at least interrogating the message it conveys about real-life genocides, and particularly the currently barely halted Israeli genocide in Palestine. Hazbin Hotel does not do that.

Hazbin Hotel S2 does everything it can to reduce as much as possible the amount of characters in Heaven responsible for its "extermination day" of the residents of Hell, in order to let Heaven itself remain an enviable goal for most of the characters. The series kinda pins all the blame on archangel Sera, but then uses upcoming antagonist Lute to make Sera look acceptable in comparison. It is revealed that Sera is just... sorry, and she "realizes the error of her ways" and promises to change, and somehow this is enough for most of the cast. The legitimate anger and trauma and need for justice that would arise in any character in Hell is just kinda... shrugged off, and absent.
There is a song on how apologizing isn't enough, sure, but the series cannot handle an actual discussion on justice and repair in the context of genocide - it is not its aim and there is too much going on. And so it trips over itself and ends up with an extremely clumsy management of that part of the narrative, clearly biting much more than it could chew when it first set up the idea of extermination.

But this isn't the biggest problem. The biggest problem is Vox. Vox, under all aspects, purposefully mirrors real-life authoritarian and populist leaders (with a literal MAGA reference in his main song); is unarguably the antagonist of season 2; and is a really horrible person overall.
And with all this, he is also the ONLY character to actually voice a legitimate anger over the exterminations. The way he explicitly uses the term genocide, and his callout of the angels who utterly fail at being accountable, is so obviously at odds with his posture as the big villain it's shocking. Vox has very real a point there; and that point is not acknowledged by anyone. It is instead drowned in things made to make Vox look like the worst person ever.

And so the general message of the series on extermination is not just a mess: it is dangerous in the way it makes all of its characters as not-responsible-for-it as possible; in the way it shows that the main character actually behind this is just a sorry leader trying to do her best; and in the way it has exactly one (1) faction trying to hold Heaven accountable, and that faction is literally the mind-controlling dictator and his crowd - the baddie who wants nothing more than to blow Heaven to smithereens.

This is probably not wanted, but the translation to real life of such a message is actively hurtful, both when it comes to understanding how genocides can be committed, and when it comes to resistance and protests and justice in the context of genocide. And so I really, really needed to write all this when featuring this song.

What I want to say here is: read on Palestine, on its history, and on the current genocide perpetrated by Israel. Read sources like the United Nations' reports at ochaopt.org or the Palestinian-Israeli magazine +972 Magazine. Donate. Talk about it. Do what you can. Please.
(Also stay informed on crimes against humanity committed in other countries too, like Ukraine or Sudan. Help if you can.)

And also, be critical of and careful about fictions that handle themes of or adjacent to genocide.

With all this, I really like this song. It's really intense, it has stayed my head ever since, and when I first heard it I immediately though it would fit Catra to a T. I'm just in... kind of an awkward position with respect to its source show. But since I really wanted to make this AMV, well, I ultimately did, hoping that with this long explanation I may be able to impact at least a few people.
