Great question, let’s talk about a few kinds of rap that are out there. This is a pretty generic list as there’s a huge array of sub-genres in rap and it would simply just take forever to cover them. Instead, I’m going to list out a few buckets of rap styles that you can adopt that are fairly generic and well known. These are moreso content or topic related than sound related, which is a whole other topic in and of itself.

Braggadocio.

This is the most stereotypical style of rap. It involves lots of self-hype and telling the world how great you are. Often, this style is characterized by aggression but it doesn’t have to be. You can still talk about how much of a badass you are without attacking others very much. Lot’s of beginners end up trying this style because they feel like it’s what they’re supposed to rap about it. That’s not really the case, only do this if you want to.

Storytelling.

This is where you focus all your efforts on telling a story. For many individuals, this is going to be a natural area for them to delve into because it’s so easy to tap. You have tons of options. You can pick stories about people you know, about yourself, or just completely make something up. The range of options makes it appealing but you also need to keep a coherent storyline, which can be difficult for many. Often this style doesn’t use as many poetic techniques but focuses heavily on a narrative.

Poetic Technique Intensive.

Another style of rap is going intense on different types of poetic techniques. This simply means using a heavy helping of something like rhyme or wordplay to show off your technical skill. The style is often characterized by huge chains of punchlines or multi-syllable rhymes. Often, sets of lines will really pop because of the short, clever messages lodged inside. One weakness, without a huge master of poetic techniques, this style can be a bit haphazard and hard to deliver one coherent message.

Party/Pop

Another rap style is the party/pop style. This style is typically unconcerned with lyrical depth, and may have a few clever lines but mostly is focused on having a very appealing musical sound. These sorts of songs tend to rely heavily on repetition and extremely catchy beats. If this is the type of music you want to make, you’ll want to focus quite a bit on good beats and crafting a few lines or messages that are very memorable for listeners.

Comedy

This category should be pretty straightforward, you’re looking for ways to make people laugh. This style often has misleading statements that end in other ways, or off-beat lyrics intended to catch the listener off guard. If you’re thinking about trying a comedy style, you’ll want to work on your punchlines and timing, just like you would for stand-up comedy.

Message-Driven

The last type of rap I’m going to cover is message-driven to make a point or get a certain message across that isn’t really in the form of a story. For example, you may be trying to explain why you think abortion is wrong, simply by laying out arguments. It doesn’t have to be that intense either, you could simply be writing about how much you like ice-cream. Either way, you’re working out a message that’s not directly tied to a single story.


Hopefully that gives you a few ideas for styles you can try. As you might imagine, there’s quite a bit of possible overlap, but it typically requires higher level of skills to blend multiple techniques.
