Alright, it’s been a while since I covered this topic, so in this video I’ll go over how to write punchlines. For the purpose of this video, we’ll be focused on punchlines in general, not specifically for battles.

As you may already know, punchlines are lines which have impact. They are the lines which makes the crowd impressed, or makes a random listener think you’re clever. There are many types of punchlines you can create, but the bottom line is to have an impact. One way to think about punchlines is to compare them to comedy. In comedy, you can have small one liners or you can have long drawn out haymakers with a twist at the end but it’s the part that is memorable and impactful

In rap, you can take similar approaches. You might throw in a series of small, unrelated wordplays. Or you could craft a much longer extended metaphor with some pop at the end. Or you could just reveal an interesting and dramatic truth. It’s always a little difficult to say exactly what will stick out.

If you want to write a punchline, you’ll want to start with something clever or memorable. It’s easier said than done, but one of the most approachable ways is to think of a wordplay to start with. Once you’ve come up with your punchline, you build a setup to it. These can be one line, a couplet, or an entire verse. It really depends on what you’re working on.

So let’s start with a wordplay - Current

Current can either be the present moment or current can be how the water moves in certain bodies of water. So using that play we can come up with something like this:

I only exist in the current like the ocean is taking me

Now, we need to add a setup that incorporates the usage of current related to the present moment.

At eighty-three, future and past won’t be shaking me
Cause I exist in the current like the ocean’s taken me

And now we’ve got a punchline.
