Raag Miya Malhar played on Harmonium by Upendra Sahasrabuddhe, a disciple of veteran harmonium maestro Pandit Appasaheb Jalgaonkar and Senior Violinist Pandit Vasantrao Sheolikar. This is a recording from a Live concert held at Bharati Nivas Hall in Pune on 26th August 2018. Tabla Accompaniment is by Shailesh Vartak while Harmonium Support is provided by Dattaraj Falnikar.
Miya Malhar is a very difficult raag to perform on Harmonium due to the inherent limitations of the instrument itself. Here Upendra has performed three compositions - Vilambit set to Ektal - 12 Beats, followed by a Madhyalay Set to Addha Teental and a Drut composition in Teental - both 16 beats.
Upendra primarily plays with a Gayaki style of playing. Being a student of a harmonium player and also a violinist, Upendra not only presents this Raag with a unique continuity on the instruments which was the specialty of Appa jalgaonkar's style of playing and is able to carry the same through out his performance without breaking the notes between both the Nishads of Miya Malhar, but he also brings the Tant aang in many of his frames. It is also very interesting to watch how the Aandolit komal Gandhar has been played during the entire performance.
Miya Malhar is supposed to be a seasonal melody played during the rainy season. Here you can even see the audience reactions when it started raining during the performance.
