🇯🇵 I Applied for Social Security from Japan (And It Worked) - Retiring in Japan

Описание: 🇯🇵 Yesterday I successfully applied for U.S. Social Security from my home here in Japan.

The process turned out to be far simpler than I expected. I logged into my Social Security account on the official Social Security Administration website and completed the application entirely online. I didn’t need a VPN, didn’t need to travel to the embassy, and didn’t need any special workaround to do it from overseas.

The one tricky detail I discovered is that the system will only allow you to begin the application when you are within four months of your first eligible payment month. I initially ran into that barrier when I tried to start the process too early. Once I was within the correct window, everything moved forward smoothly.

This marks another step in my first full year of retirement. After filing our U.S. taxes earlier this year and beginning the process of sorting out our Japan taxes, applying for Social Security is another piece of the puzzle of building a stable retirement life here in Japan.

This video is simply a real-world account of what the experience was like applying for Social Security while living abroad. If you’re an American living overseas—or thinking about retiring abroad—I hope this helps demystify the process a little.
