Описание: I'm honoured and excited to have my composition 'Airships', appear on the new Trinity grade 7 syllabus commencing 2023. I hope pianists out there will enjoy it as much as some of my own students have. I would describe it as floating and enigmatic. In spite of being barred mostly in 4/4 there is ambiguity in the metre and little variations every time the thematic hook returns, always casting it in a different light. If any of you know the old anime film, 'Laputa' the idea behind the piece is a desire to gently lift up into the sky, to transcend human limits. But there is also a bit of Icarus in there - of the tragedy often brought on by such dreams. This is typified by the many airship disasters in the earlier part of the twentieth century, a memory of which flares up in the middle of the piece. They were elegant creatures, defying gravity and aspiring to bring the luxury of the ocean liner into the skies, but now they seem like unreal ghosts, black and white memories from a distant age. Freedom tinged with regret.
