In this video, we explore the Adagio from BWV 564 by Johann Sebastian Bach, taken from the Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C major, Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C major, BWV 564.
Likely composed during Bach’s early Weimar period (c. 1708–1717), this monumental organ work reflects both his deep knowledge of North German organ tradition and his growing fascination with Italian concerto style. The Adagio, placed between the virtuosic toccata and the final fugue, stands out as an intensely expressive and harmonically rich movement that almost feels like a vocal aria transcribed for organ.
In this analysis, I show how this Adagio functions as a true “condensed style” of Bach. We encounter many of his signature stylistic features: expressive appoggiaturas that heighten rhetorical tension, rich seventh chords and diminished sevenths that intensify harmonic color, and striking dominant harmonies placed on mediant degrees, creating unexpected yet deeply logical progressions. Through these elements, Bach achieves a powerful synthesis of counterpoint, harmonic boldness, and dramatic expressivity.
