I set off at first light of dawn to kayak all the way around Raymond Island in Victoria’s beautiful Gippsland Lakes. What unfolded was a quiet 16km solo kayak adventure filled with still water, birdlife, and complete solitude.
Along the way, I pulled up on a secluded beach to cook a simple kayak camping breakfast of eggs and bacon, followed by a refreshing swim before continuing the paddle. As I worked my way around the island, I also shared a little of the history of Raymond Island and what makes this place so special.
The full kayak circumnavigation took around 4 hours, paddling steadily through sheltered waters near Paynesville, making this a perfect example of peaceful kayaking in Australia. No rush, no noise — just a sunrise paddle, simple food, and time outdoors.
