The Battle of Kursk took place from July 5 to August 23, 1943, during World War II. It was fought between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union near the city of Kursk in western Russia.

Germany launched Operation Citadel, aiming to eliminate a large Soviet salient (bulge) in the front line around Kursk. The German plan relied heavily on armored divisions, including Tiger and Panther tanks.

The Soviets, however, had extensive intelligence about the attack and prepared deep defensive lines with minefields, anti-tank guns, and fortified positions. When the German offensive began, it met strong resistance.

One of the most famous engagements of the battle was the massive tank clash at Prokhorovka on July 12, often described as one of the largest tank battles in history.

After failing to break through Soviet defenses, Germany halted the offensive. The Red Army then launched powerful counteroffensives, pushing German forces back.

The Battle of Kursk was one of the largest battles ever fought and marked the last major German offensive in the east. After Kursk, the Soviet Union maintained the strategic initiative for the rest of the war.
