THE STORY OF OUR VERSION OF THE DERELICT:
Not long after we founded the Skeleton Crew Pirate Band in the 1990s we found that no self-respecting pirate crew could roam the musical seas without performing "15 Men on the Dead Man's Chest" or, as was originally called, "The Derelict." We searched high and low for that classic, only to discover that the tune most associated with the poem just didn't quite "Yo Ho Ho" it in the way we felt it should. So we wrote our own. Mallory and the crew perform it here.
This version was recorded in 2006 by Dennis Gilmore, who played on and sang in and produced our album, "Kings of the Sea." And he saved some tracks that we thought long lost, some of which we will present here as part of the "Mallory & McCall Vintage" series. Through the years our pirate band consisted of Dennis "Patch" Patterson, Jon Lackey and various members of the west coast pirate community, which still is going strong. We miss it!
As we couldn't quite come up with illustrations that exactly told the story of the song, we have instead presented some classic pirate art from such as Pyle and Wyeth along with a few vintage photos of the Skeleton Crew. We hope you enjoy our offerings. More will be coming soon!
BTW, this track is featured in the out credits of the film by Mitchael Toles: "Pirates of Ghost Island."
