How to teach your horse to focus using a skinny jump with Kirstin Kelly. Getting your horse to focus comes with confidence, training, and trust. A green horse will spend most of his time looking at everything else but the jump as he is trying to take it all in. Riding consistently in a smooth rhythm with both legs down and channeling him straight is important. The hands are super important as if the hand is pulling left, right the horse starts thinking about the rider instead of the jump. Remember we want the horse to focus on the jump and be listening to the rider but a horse that is focussed on the rider won't lock on to the jump and will be surprised and runoff. a great tool for me as a coach is the horses' ears. When approaching a jump they are mostly back listening to the rider but 6 strides away they flick forward and look at the jump. Often I see the ears stay back which shows the horse is thinking backward or thinking of the rider. This can be because the hand is too strong, rider is too rough, the tack is uncomfortable. You will see horses run off a jump when they are fighting with their rider because they were so busy arguing they didnt have time to focus on the jump .
Teaching your horse to focus by using a skinny is a fabulous way of getting the horse to concentrate on the jump while listening to the rider. This exercise will slow the mind down and teach the horse to always look for the jumps as he will feel the riders attention focus on the skinny jump. It teaches confidence, trust, and discipline.
