Vesuvius - No Way Out | In the Shadow of Volcanoes (1/5)

Описание: Since the destruction of Pompeii, Vesuvius has erupted many times, but the lava flow has followed different routes. Archaeological remains around the mountain show that for millennia the towns to the north and east of the mountain have fallen victim more often than Naples and Pompeii. Vesuvius has erupted 30 times in recorded history, and is long overdue for another eruption. The last was in 1944 and killed 26 people. Today the city if Naples and the towns that surround the mountain are inhabited by over 3 million people and the houses of the city have been built so close to the summit and with such poor urban planning that the labyrinth of roads would make escape from the lava flows and boiling ashes almost impossible. The episode is particularly focused on the urbanization of this volcanic area, the evacuation routes and what the people of the huge Vesuvius “Red Zone” might encounter. The scenario is nightmarish. On the one hand the main evacuation routes are along the coastal roads in and out of Naples (northwards and north eastwards) and along the main motorway that circumnavigates the volcano. While inhabitants would try to leave the city emergency services would be trying to get in to put out the fires caused by falling incandescent material and collapsing buildings. Participation in fire brigade and civil defence evacuation exercises add an exciting new dimension to the film showing that should Vesuvius really erupt – even with a week’s warning – the consequences would still be truly catastrophic.

Three in the world’s most volcanic country – Italy, one in Spain and one in Greece. In the shadow of Volcanoes is a 5-part series of documentaries about the threats volcanoes pose to communities, how the local people cope and the advantages they gain from living close to active volcanoes.
There are different kinds of volcanoes: some explosive, some that are lava domes and others that are both. Far from fleeing volcanoes, human civilisations have sought the benefits of living close to these fertile mountains, despite periodical catastrophes such as the one that struck Pompeii on October 24 79 AD and continue to destroy structures and villages on Mount Etna today.
With unique access to geologists, volcanologists, agronomists, archaeologists and civil defence operatives, as well as natural, unscripted interactions with the local people residing there, we tell the story of what it is like to live in the shadow of five volcanoes.
