Описание: Mount Etna is Europe’s largest non-submerged volcano. At more than 3000 meters high it is also a stunning sight from the sea – dominating the Eastern Sicilian coast. Like all Italian volcanoes this one began at the bending fault line where the Euroasian and African continental plates meet and twist. Over hundreds of thousands of years the volcano has produced spectacular eruptions and lava flows. The ash has made the plains around the mountain extremely fertile, producing the best oranges and fine wines.
This episode features the orange groves and vineyards of Etna, mostly harvested by the women of the community. The slopes of Etna are among the most fertile in Italy. We concentrate on the agricultural repercussions of the volcano and how the local communities accept the danger caused by Etna because of the advantages its regular eruptions provide. Etna dominates the city of Catania, where tourists come to admire the mountain when in full eruption, safe in the knowledge that an erupting volcano is letting off steam, not building it up for a future explosion. However, monitoring the eruptions is complicated by the regular swelling of the earth due to trapped gases that can be fatal if breathed. And the people of Catania live under its shadow, only too aware that it can be as destructive as it is beautiful.

Millions of people around the world live under the shadow of a volcano. We have chosen five situations that are unique among the volcano communities of the world. Three in the world’s most volcanic country – Italy, one in Spain and one in Greece. In the shadow of Volcanoes is a 5-part series of documentaries about the threats volcanoes pose to communities, how the local people cope and the advantages they gain from living close to active volcanoes.
There are different kinds of volcanoes: some explosive, some that are lava domes and others that are both. Far from fleeing volcanoes, human civilisations have sought the benefits of living close to these fertile mountains, despite periodical catastrophes such as the one that struck Pompeii on October 24 79 AD and continue to destroy structures and villages on Mount Etna today.
With unique access to geologists, volcanologists, agronomists, archaeologists and civil defence operatives, as well as natural, unscripted interactions with the local people residing there, we tell the story of what it is like to live in the shadow of five volcanoes.
