Question:
Which things do NOT break the fast?
Answer:
There are some actions that people often think break the fast, but in Islamic law they do not break the fast, especially when they are not done intentionally.
Eating or drinking forgetfully
If a fasting person forgets that he is fasting and eats or drinks something, the fast does not break. As soon as he remembers, he should stop immediately. There is no Qada (make-up fast) and no Kaffarah (expiation) in this case.
Vomiting unintentionally
If someone vomits naturally without trying to do so, the fast does not break.
However, if a person intentionally causes vomiting, then the fast breaks and Qada becomes necessary.
Bleeding
If blood comes out from any part of the body, such as from a wound or slight bleeding from the gums, the fast does not break.
However, if a large amount of blood enters the mouth and is swallowed, the ruling may be different.
Putting medicine in the eyes or ears
According to the common scholarly opinion, putting eye drops does not break the fast because there is no direct passage from the eyes to the stomach.
Regarding ear drops, scholars mention some details, but generally the fast does not break unless something reaches the throat.
Taking a bath or cooling the body with water
Taking a bath, showering, or pouring water over the body to cool down in hot weather is allowed and does not break the fast.
However, care must be taken that water does not enter the mouth or nose and go inside.
