Описание: After a heavy and costly victory at Saipan, it was time for the US Navy’s V Amphibious Corps to move on to the next phase of the operation in the Marianas. Their next target lay just three nautical miles south of Saipan, where the island of Tinian posed a permanent threat of raids and artillery attacks to future air bases on Saipan as long as the Japanese garrison consisted of about 9,000 men was not neutralized.
