Tinian is a small island located in the western Pacific Ocean, part of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. During World War II, the island was occupied by the Japanese, but it was captured by the United States in July 1944.
After the capture of Tinian, the US military began constructing airfields on the island, which were used to launch bombing raids on Japan. It was also selected as the base for the 509th Composite Group, a specialized unit tasked with delivering atomic bombs.
On August 6, 1945, the B-29 bomber Enola Gay, piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets, took off from Tinian with the first atomic bomb, code-named "Little Boy," aboard. The target was the Japanese city of Hiroshima, and the bomb was dropped with devastating effect, killing an estimated 140,000 people.
Three days later, on August 9, another B-29 bomber, Bockscar, took off from Tinian with a second atomic bomb, code-named "Fat Man," aboard. The target was the city of Nagasaki, and the bomb killed an estimated 70,000 people.
