Jayamangali river born in the hills of Devarayanadurga in Tumakuru district, flowing the 80km and join the Uttara Pinakini at Sangameshwara in Andhra Pradesh before draining into the Bay of Bengal. Jayamangali flows in 80 KM through Tumkuru.
During the 70s and 80s, Jayamangali, was a spectacle to behold, as it would flow in full glory, unabated for months. The seasonal rains, in its wake, would fill the wells, lakes and Talapariges, small springs would remain recharged throughout the year even though Jayamangali had water for just six months.
In the days of yore and during the times of plenty, farmers in the vicinity of the banks of the river grew paddy, betel leaves and sugarcane drawing the water from the river.
1990s. The Wheels of Fortune seem to change for the villagers. Mother nature’s erratic and unpredictable rain along with human intervention by a Mafia operation called sand mining led to the river going bone dry. The massive exploitation of the sand let to deep trenches which eventually started to become garbage dumps.
With all this devastation Jayamangali has some Well wishers as well. They have taken the battle to the opposition where they have voluntarily banned sand mining along the course of the river. There are villages which are just 5 to 6 km from Kodigenahalli who have put a hold on sand mining they will only give it for personal use and it is to be carried in Bullock carts.
These brave heart villagers have stood strong and have not succumbed to the pressure put up by the Mafia. They have courageously protested and blocked the sand mining
These measures by the villagers have been much appreciated and as helped in protecting and rejuvenating Jayamangali and as a consequence the water table holds up even during the worst of droughts. Now, the area rarely faces drinking water problems even when there is no flow of water
