Dr. Bernice A. King addresses Harrison, Arkansas provides insight on father’s legacy, race relations in “Crucial Community Conversations”

The Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, a division of the Arkansas Department of Education, returns to Harrison, Arkansas to present a virtual program, “Crucial Community Conversations” with Dr. Bernice A. King, Daughter of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King and CEO of the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change. Executive Director Scarbrough served as the moderator for the in-depth discussion on improving race relations in Harrison, Arkansas.

“Crucial Community Conversations” is the first in a series of virtual programs highlighting race relations, social justice, and nonviolence in Arkansas through the lens of current events. The inaugural program originally scheduled for April 9 in Harrison had more than 500 confirmed guests but was cancelled due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
During the virtual session, Executive Director DuShun Scarbrough and Dr. Bernice A. King asked tough questions and addressed sensitive topics of race, nonviolence, and social justice.


The panel will include Harrison Mayor Jerry Jackson and Layne Ragsdale, Harrison Task Force on Race Relations. Topics will include the “White Pride” sign, the viral video branding Harrison as one of the most racist towns in America, and Black Lives Matter. Scarbrough told Harrison officials that racism is a learned behavior and it takes collaborations across multiple generations to educate and promote progress, diversity, to change the city's image.
