This event took place at the Clinton School of Public Service on September 22nd, 2008.
Beatrice Biira, a Clinton School student, tells the story of her rise from poverty in Western Uganda to a college degree and graduate school – all with the help of a goat named "Luck" which was provided to her family by Heifer International. She discusses the idea that education is a necessary component for life and that poverty unfortunately denies many children the opportunity to learn and better themselves simply because they cannot afford to go to school.
About the speaker: Growing up in Kisinga Village in Western Uganda, Beatrice Biira overcame amazing odds to earn an education thanks to Heifer International’s world renowned program. When she was 9-years-old, Biira’s family received the gift of a goat from Heifer and used the profits from selling goat milk to put Birra through school. She is a student in the 2010 class of the Clinton School and is a worldwide inspiration. Her story is now the subject of the bestselling children’s book, “Beatrice’s Goat.”
