Aged coffee from 1970, everything handmade, hand poured and hand crafted? This is Cafe de L'Ambre. Quite simply, it is my favorite coffee shop on the planet and this is a video we shot during my first visit in the summer of 2007.

Founded by Ichiro Sekiguchi in 1948, Cafe de L'Ambre has been operating ever since. In July 2007, we were in Tokyo to do espresso machine installation and maintenance for the World Barista Championship, but before that got off the ground, John Sanders wanted to visit this Ginza coffee shop.

Featured in this video are: Maki Uchida, Hayashi Fujihiko, Junko Abe and Satomi Fujihiko. Master Sekiguchi was also present during our visit but was roasting coffee. In this story, you'll learn about the history of L'Ambre, its' menu and their approach to brewing with the Nel Drip.

Just to note:
This video takes the perspective of the year it was shot: 2007. At that time, Cafe de L'Ambre had been operating for 59 years with Fujihiko working there for 27 years, and Master Sekiguchi was 93 years old. As this video is being released in 2021, Master Sekuguchi passed away on March 16, 2018 and Fujihiko is now the Master of Cafe de L'Ambre.

The Canon Elura 100 MiniDV camcorder was used to shoot this video. It is a MiniDV NTSC video camera shooting 480p and converted digitally and imported into DaVinci Resolve for editing. Finished video resolution is 1080p but is unable to upscale the original image.
