ECKINGTON: North East Derbyshire Parish #13 of 24

Описание: A parish now which i seriously have had to think about a lot. This is one that is so large and has so many settlements in it, that there is no way I can confidently say that everything has been covered. For once, I am happy to admit, there are bit that are left out of this one. Hopefully, nothing too major!

It consists of a string of villages all surrounding one central location in the Moss Valley, just to the South of Sheffield. This is an area made famous by the largest ironworks in Derbyshire, an area that used to make scythes and sickles and nails too, with products from the valley shipped all over the world.

There's evidence here of a Roman settlement at one time as well, so the history books are overflowing with things to say about this village - and yes, a village it is. Even though the size and the population of the place belies its status, this is one of those anomalies that I just can't wrap my head around: a main settlement that has well over 11,000 people yet doesn't have town status.
