What do you do when your dog gets lonely?
Dogs are pack animals. Unlike cats, who are solitary, dogs need companionship.
They’ll sit around all day waiting for that moment when you come home from work, but in the meantime, a lonely dog can create mayhem in your house.
How many times have you returned home and found your friendly dog has gotten into the garbage? Dragged it throughout the house?
Or decided to chew on your shoe?
And if that’s not bad enough, a lonely dog can develop anxiety which can show itself by negative, self-injurious behaviors such as chasing their tail, excessive biting or licking, or scratching themselves.

So if you’re seeing these types of behavior while you’re out, and if you can’t devote more time with your little canine, should you go ahead and get a companion dog for her?
It’s a huge decision for you that you don’t make lightly. You must weigh the pros and cons for you and your family first and really spend time thinking about this big step.
But when if you decide “yes” and want a companion for your lovable little pooch, then you will need to introduce the new dog to her.
First of all, remember that YOU are in charge and it’s important that
you don’t force them to interact. It will be a slow process with lots of sniffing each other’s backend!
Your job is just to maintain a calm setting. No other distractions, no loud noises or interruptions. Let the old dog and new dog take time to just interact. Dogs are always curious about each other. And they WILL interact.
You should observe their body language. It should be curious. See my video about the curious tail position for your chihuahua.

Look for tension. If one dog or the other tenses up, or their fur on their neck stiffens up. You may need to intervene. Again, remember you’re in control. If you feel there is tension between the two, just separate the new dog away from your family dog, and then reassure your family dog that it’s ok. Pet her and hold her until she calms down. Maybe take her on a short walk because doing so re-establishes you as the one in control.
Usually, given time and positive reassurance, the 2 will quickly bond. Make sure you have new toys, food dishes, and a new bed for the new dog. However, you may notice that they quickly begin sharing the same bed regardless.
That’s a good sign.
All-in-all dogs usually bond. They are pack animals. And the pack has just grown by 1. It’s an exciting time having a new dog in the
house. Love them both.
And you might just see the negative behaviors go away. Your lonely
dog now has a companion when you’re out of the house and the
anxiety should ease.
Good luck with your new addition and give them a hug for me.
