Usually paired with other substances, when they can no longer bare to live in the real world, they use it to escape. Some folks just have an addictive nature and alcohol is usually the first thing tried when we transcend into young adults. Only then do they find out too late that they have this way about them and get hooked on drinking excessively.
When I was in my teens my life was hell, home life was extremely turbulent and toxic, peace barely existed. A lot had happened in a short space of time, a major move from my homeland to another country, having to learn the language, being an outcast amongst my peers and being severely bullied. Having a stepfather who didn't know how to parent and wanted only to control with an iron fist. Difficult things had happened even before we had moved, things that had already traumatized me, so I was already fraying at the edges. I discovered alcohol and I enjoyed how it numbed my senses, I would hide it in my room and looking back I would say I was borderline alcoholic. I wanted to escape my life, I had barely a friend, no other relatives I could escape to and my home felt unsafe and overwhelming. Then one day through some kids on my block I met one of their Moms. She was brilliant and took the time to listen to me and really hear me. She made me feel seen and although there was a huge age gap she became my best friend. In her own unique way she saved me from a far worse fate. She allowed me to spend time at her home when I needed to escape. She chatted with me and listened to me and tried to guide me away from the negative thoughts in my head. She succeeded, if I hadn't of met her who knows how I might of turned out or who I would of turned into.
This poem / song is for who I might of been if I hadn't of received her help and I dedicate this one to her, Henjorie may you rest in peace my earth angel.
