From Cochabamba, I took a bus to Oruro, where I was not sure what to expect. Staying right next to Plaza del Folklore (venue of Bolivia's largest Carnaval celebrations) helped, as the location provided easy access to all the attractions.
Santuario Virgen del Socavon has one of Bolivia's most beautiful churches as well as a museum and a mine one can visit on a guided tour. A Teleferio nearby takes one to Monumento a la Virgen Candelaria, the highest statue of its kind in South America, and panoramic views of the surrounding.
The next day was May Day and I did not realize there would be a parade in town, let alone, probably the largest such parade in the country, due to Oruro's history as a mining town. Oruro's markets are also lively.
