Movie stars like Cary Grant, who was a sophisticated star in the golden years of Hollywood but dropped LSD dozens of times in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was so taken with it that he started evangelizing it to anyone who would listen — and some who didn’t want to!
Or Peter Lorre, who most people recognize from his unique look and the villains and scoundrels he often played. The look wasn’t all genetic though. Lorre was well-known amongst the Hollywood elite for his addiction to morphine and other drugs. He got to the point where he would only take roles that didn’t interfere with his drug-taking.

The dark secrets of classic Hollywood stars weren’t all about addiction though. Some were just plain crazy. Take Orson Welles, one of the most famed actors and directors of all time. He would have the makeup department make him a fake nose for every role he played, getting more and more exaggerated as his career went on. He even named the noses and kept them in a box in his home, to pull out for his party guests.

There were also just plain abusive stars, like Joan Crawford and Peter Sellers. Crawford’s crazy behavior was documented in her adopted daughter’s book Mommie Dearest, which ended up being made into a movie about her life. And Peter Sellers had a deep-seated fear of the color purple, among other strange habits.
