July 26, 1944 – Elements of the 3rd Armored Division and the 47th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division push on Marigny, Manche, France during the second day of Operation Cobra. Cobra was intended to break through the stagnated front lines in Norman hedgerow country. The ground operation began on July 25, after intense bombings on July 24-25 by the Eighth Air Force. (Unfortunately, approximately 136 American soldiers were killed and over 600 were wounded as a result of bombs released on friendly positions.) One day later - July 26 - the 1st Infantry Division would pass through the 9th Infantry Division to attack Marigny.
