Boiling and Electrolysis: An Example of Physical and Chemical Changes
Electrolysis and Boiling of water
An example of the differences between chemical and physical changes can be seen with boiling and water electrolysis.
Similarities and Differences between the Processes
Both processes affect water. Both processes result in the production of gas. Both processes require energy input. Electrolysis utilises electrical energy while boiling requires heat.
Boiling Water
The process of boiling changes the state of water from liquid to gas. While gas is produced it
doesn’t indicate a chemical change. Steam has the same chemical properties as liquid water. It is easily reversed through condensation.
Electrolysis of Water
Electrolysis uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. It is a chemical change. Two gases are produced, and it is clear that these gases have different chemical properties compared to
water. Hydrogen combusts while water does not.
