Pokemon Silver - Battle with Red

With the announcement of Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver on the Nintendo DS last week, I thought it would be a good idea to whet my appetite for it by playing through the original Game Boy Color version of Pokemon Silver all over again. Let's face it - the Johto generation is a HUGE highlight in the progression of the Pokemon series and one of the more epic sagas to boot.

The big highlight for the original titles, no one can deny, would be encountering Red (A.K.A. the player character in Red/Blue/Yellow) and HIS Pokemon team deep inside the depths of Mt. Silver. As far as I'm concerned, no other NPC's Pokemon party would ever come close to being THIS tough in a single game, not before and not since. Of course, being the end boss destroyer that I am (!), I decided to record myself taking him on.

The team I brought with me is what I would dub "Team BadAxe" for the purpose of this demonstration. True to its name, all six members were named after various badguys in mostly videogames with one exception being from a TV show:

*Graveler - Dr. Neo Cortex (Crash Bandicoot)
*Jynx - Kammy Koopa (Paper Mario)
*Lanturn - Pronyma (Tales of Symphonia)
*Magmar - Red (Spyro: A Hero's Tail)
*Meganium - Baron Praxis (Jak II)
*Xatu - Lord Zedd (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers)

All party members were at level 65 save for one, which I will explain when I get to the Snorlax fight. And here's how it all went down.

Pikachu VS Neo
Not much to say here, other than that Pikachu never stood a chance even if it DID attack first. Yay, Quick Claw.

Espeon VS Kammy
When combatting fellow psychics, you can't see me going head-on without a great ghost or dark technique, and Shadow Ball is definitely all that. Espeon's Reflect is still pretty annoying either way, though I'm glad this turned out to be one of the better battles against it.

Charizard VS Pronyma
Not a very lucky fight against Charizard at all. Fire versus water, and BOTH of its flamethrower attacks were critical and almost screwed her over. Thank goodness she prospered, ready for much later on...

Venusaur VS Red
Yet another easy ride. Usually, the Venusaur either does THAT or tries to butcher it with a Giga Drain, but either way, it's still a spectacular failure.

Blastoise VS Praxis
Much like Charizard, this also went unlucky, even to the point that Pronyma had to come in to save the day. On most other attempts, Blastoise would either goof off with Whirlpool or Rain Dance before letting loose with Blizzard, which ended up completely screwing Praxis over in 2 turns as shown here. So yeah, tough fight.

Snorlax VS Zedd
I hate hate hate hate hate hate HATE Snorlax!! (lol kefka mode)
Now you know why I ended up pumping up Zedd with lots of vitamins AND all the Rare Candies that I had in my possession. Being one of two candidates to wield the Nightmare TM (the other being Kammy and her weak speed stats), sending him out here was a must in order to put this one into control - when used on a sleeping Pokemon, Nightmare would take out about a quarter of its HP per turn, and since sleeping is Snorlax's specialty, it's seen as an essential tool here. Surprisingly, this turned out to be a very lucky fight - 2 critical hits, only got paralysed by the ever-so-annoying Body Slam attack once, and Snorlax NEVER used Rest once! I was NOT expecting that!

And that's how I defeated Red. Now all I gotta do now is wait til the DS versions come out and maybe I'd put up THEIR version as a video response...? Anyway, thanks for watching :D
