Old Dogs almost do King Alfred's Way - five days in June 2022

Описание: King Alfred's Way 2022, in five days. well, most of it. We managed 320km, broke a bike, bypassed the ridgeway and had to call on the use of a train and motorhome to complete the task.

Massive Kudos to everyone that undertakes and completes this (tough) route!

We stayed at The Sustainability Centre at East Meon, an Airbnb in Nether Wallop, a glamping site near Devizes, and at the Crown and Horns Inn at East Ilsley.

The weather was just too hot and we were just too tired to take on the ridgeway, so used the Kennet & Avon canal, climbing up to East Ilsley at the end of the day. The canal looks easy but some parts are very overgrown, and it's far from the most direct route.

During the five days we got lost a couple of times, (terminally) cracked a bike frame, wrote off a chainweel, and ripped out and destroyed a Di2 cable. It's a great challenge, worth taking a spare rear hanger, running tubeless, and taking time to really ensure you're on the correct route at a couple of tricky junctions. Bike shops tried to help but one cannot count on all spares being readily available.

Oh and ensure you have a very comfy saddle!

The red flags were flying on Salisbury Plain, so please allow for taking a detour.
