Rainbow Springs in Rotorua, a 22-acre park in New Zealand’s North Island, is a premier nature experience featuring the National Kiwi Hatchery. We explored native bush, viewed trout, and saw endangered kiwis in nocturnal enclosures. It is a renowned conservation hub. The National Kiwi Hatchery: This is the heart of the park and the largest, most successful kiwi conservation center in the world. It acts as a specialized center for Operation Nest Egg, which raises kiwi chicks to increase their survival rate from 5% to 60% before releasing them into the wild. Nocturnal Kiwi Viewing: The park includes a specialized kiwi house, allowing visitors to see the elusive, flightless, nocturnal birds foraging for food, which is a rare sight. Native Flora & Fauna: Set in 22 acres of native forest, the park houses other native species, including the prehistoric Tuatara (reptile) and various native birds.
