Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital, is a 7,000-year-old "city that grows but does not age," blending Thracian, Roman, and Ottoman history with a modern vibe. Key sites include the vast National History Museum in Boyana and the central Sofia History Museum. Roman ruins, like the Serdika complex, are integrated into the city’s metro and streets. The National History Museum in Boyana is famous for its collection of Thracian gold treasures and medieval Bulgarian artifacts. The Roman Remains in Sofia are visible throughout the modern center, particularly around the Serdika metro station, as seen in our pictures. We enjoyed seeing the ruins of Roman streets, baths, and homes, as well as the well-preserved 4th century Church of St. George Rotunda. The Sofia History Museum (Central Bathhouse) is housed in the stunning former Central Mineral Baths building, this museum focuses on the history of the city itself. It covers the development of Sofia from antiquity to the mid-20th century, including artifacts from Roman Serdica and the royal family. The National Institute of Archaeology, located in a former 15th-century mosque, showcases major archaeological finds, including the famous bronze head of King Seuthes III. Whether walking over excavated Roman streets or gazing at Thracian gold, Sofia provides an accessible, rich, and often surprising glimpse into the foundations of European history.
